Fresh Arts Brings a Fresh Approach to Make Music Day Houston 2025!

Fresh Arts is proud to serve as the new lead organizer of Make Music Day Houston, the city’s annual free celebration of music held each year on June 21.

Previously managed by the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, Make Music Day Houston is now under the direction of Gracie Chavez, Fresh Arts’ newly appointed Programs Director and the City of Houston’s former—and first—Music Officer. Chavez first introduced the program to Houston in [insert year] and brings a strong record of artist advocacy, event planning, and community-building to her new role.

With Fresh Arts at the helm, the event is being reimagined with a renewed focus on equity, access, and meaningful support for local performers, especially at a time when arts funding and opportunities in the city are increasingly limited.


🎶 What is Make Music Day?

Make Music Day is part of a global movement celebrated in over 1,000 cities across 120 countries, activating public and private spaces with free performances by musicians of all styles, ages, and experience levels.

In Houston, the celebration spans parks, porches, cafes, sidewalks, and cultural spaces—turning the entire city into a stage for local talent.

The platform serves as a matchmaking hub, connecting performers with available venues—from businesses and storefronts to community spaces and private patios.

Participation is free, and all performances are open to the public. Whether you’re a seasoned band, student group, or emerging solo act, Make Music Day Houston is an open invitation to share your sound and join a global celebration of music.

Local businesses, nonprofits, and property owners are also encouraged to register as hosts and help bring live music to every corner of the city.


What’s New in 2025

Fresh Arts will kick off the 2025 celebration with a special launch event in Arts District Houston, where the organization also serves as the official management entity.

While this year’s transition came together quickly following the closure of the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, Fresh Arts was proud to step in and ensure the continuity of this treasured event.

Looking ahead, Fresh Arts is committed to:

  • Expanding participation across the city

  • Increasing support and visibility for local performers

  • Deepening partnerships that celebrate Houston’s diverse musical ecosystem
