Houston Arts Venue Registry Collaborators
The Houston BIPOC Arts Network and Fund (BANF) was created to support the vibrant Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, and other communities of color across Greater Houston in fully expressing their power, traditions, and values. BANF provides support through grantmaking, advocacy, and intentional network-building that shifts traditional funding models and centers cultural equity.
As a multi-year, learning-driven initiative, BANF is led by and for the artists, organizations, and communities it serves. This commitment to build a BIPOC-owned venue registry to amplify BIPOC organizations/businesses was birthed/manifested/desired by the first individual artist awardee cohort in 2023.
Aris Kian is a Houston enthusiast and student of abolition. Her poems are published with Button Poetry, West Branch, Obsidian Lit, The West Review, Write About Now and elsewhere. As an Inprint C. Glenn Cambor Fellow, she received her MFA from the University of Houston and received the 2022 Inprint Marion Barthelme Prize in Creative Writing. Recently, she ranked #1 in the 2024 Southern Fried Poetry Slam with the team Smoke Slam coached by Ebony Stewart, ranked #2 in the 2023 Womxn of the World Poetry Slam. She previously served as the 2023-2025 Houston Poet Laureate, and is a part of the 2023 BANF Cohort and 2023 Creative Catalyst Fellow with Sonny Mehta.
Monica Villarreal is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and organizer whose work centers identity, migration, and land sovereignty. She is founder of Xochipilli Collective and Primer Palabra of Danza Azteca Macuilxochitl. Monica has served on grant panels for Houston Arts Alliance, BIPOC Arts Network & Fund, and The Idea Fund. She is an Intercultural Leadership Institute Fellow, BANF Peer-to-Peer Mentorship recipient, and member of the HouArts in Action Task Force. Her grants include Houston Endowment, The Idea Fund, Houston Arts Alliance, and BANF. Monica brings a community-centered, culturally responsive lens to her work and is committed to uplifting diverse artistic practices and voices in both traditional and contemporary art forms.
