Billion Tekleab’s ” This is not a performance” will take place as a hyperextension of Unearthing: Black Porosity, performance starts at 7PM, and the space will be open from 6-9 pm. Billion Tekleab (born, 2000, Houston, Texas) is an Eritrean-American interdisciplinary artist. To address he dispossession of seld particularly occurring to Black people across the diaspora, Tekleab works through poetry, sculpture, performance, and sound. Her practice explores the materiality of objects dissembling wood and steel, and building with dirt and paint, seeking to make visible the experience of resistance, grief, joy, and softness. Within permeance and sound, Tekleab embodies both story -teller and witness to these experiences.

Unearthing: Black Porosity is an amalgamation of works exploring the ongoing lasting legacies, histories, and current relations of Black +/ Indigenous lifeways in the gulf south/ global south. Engaging writings from Black/ Caribbean scholars like the “The Black Shoals”, by Tiffany Lethabo King and Glissant’s “Poetics of Relations,” Imageries of Black life physically antithesis Blackness and colonial enclosure: Indigeneity and extraction: land and water relations. Unearthing: Black Porosities materializes as performance, sculpture, cyanotype, soundscapes, and cinema.
