About Make Music Day

Make Music Day is a global celebration of music held on Friday, June 21st. Unlike a typical music festival, it’s open to anyone who wants to participate. Musicians of all ages and skill levels, from amateurs to professionals, fill streets, parks, plazas, and porches with their music. All events are free and open to the public.

Launched in France in 1982 as the Fête de la Musique, it now takes place in over 1,000 cities across 120 countries. Last year, 104 U.S. cities hosted more than 3,800 free music events.

Since 2021, the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs (MOCA) has coordinated the city-wide Make Music Day Houston. The City of Houston invites all types of musicians to join in creating a musical masterpiece on June 21st. Singers, choirs, jazz combos, rock bands, glee clubs, MCs, marching bands, mariachis, and musicians of any genre or skill level are welcome.
