LUZ Y SOMBRA Music Photography Exhibition (CASA DE CULTURA)

Join us for the opening reception of Casa de Cultura: The Living Archive—a night of music, food, drinks, celebration, and gathering. Enjoy live performances by Itzcoatl Tezkatlipoka Aztec Danza, music by Pachuco Boogie Sound System, and the premiere of Luz y Sombra, the first of two core photography exhibitions on display during the 8-week residency.

On view until August 6, Luz y Sombra is a curated selection of music photography from the archives of Violeta Alvarez, including her early work with Justice Records and her ongoing documentation of artists across genres. The work reflects the importance of cultural identity, visibility, and representation for women of color in the music industry, both in front of and behind the camera.

About The Space Taking Artist Residency

Casa de Cultura: The Living Archive is part of Violeta Alvarez’s eight-week residency with Fresh Arts. The Space Taking Artist Residency (STAR), powered by Fresh Arts, is an annual residency program that offers Houston-based artists the opportunity to experiment with new ideas, develop them into large-scale projects, and bring them to life for public audiences with our professional guidance and support.

STAR is funded in part by the Texas Commission on the Arts, Houston Endowment, the Brown Foundation, and Deal Co, in partnership with Sawyer Yards and Arts District Houston.
