Kuumba for Elders – Dancing Home (to) Houston
The Space Taking Artist Residency presents
Dancing Home: (to) Houston
Curated by Dr. Lindsay Gary + Dance Afrikana
Powered by Fresh Arts
Kuumba: A Celebration of Afro-Dance is a dance festival that celebrates Kwanzaa through one of its seven principles called Kuumba. Kuumba is Kiswahili for creativity and its purpose is to leave the community “more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.” It invites dance artists and choreographers from Houston and beyond to share through performances, workshops, and more.
In collaboration with MECA, Kuumba for Elders celebrates the creativity of Houston’s Black Dance community through a summer dance workshop series for elders (ages 60 and above).
Attendees are encouraged to:
- Bring water!
- Bring a yoga mat or towel for Kemetic Yoga
- Dress comfortably
- Be prepared to dance barefoot (indoors) or with tennis shoes (outdoors).
