Creative Movement Practices (CMP) is a movement-based theatre company established in 2020 to champion movement in theatrical productions while also redefining what the rehearsal process should look like in the modern era. We focus on shows that have a creative movement aspect to them, and are known to both do established work, new work, and devised pieces. Since we opened, we have provided paid collaborative opportunities to over 75 of Houston’s most generous creative artists. Our programming focuses on reflecting the diversity of Houston and celebrating inclusion and incorporation of self while placing self-care and body autonomy at the forefront of our practice. We do this by facilitating parent-artists with on-site childcare, incorporating self-care language and cues in all rehearsals, and encouraging each actor, designer, and technician to collaborate and communicate as we devise. By doing this, we have found that audiences can see and feel the difference when watching one of our final products.

Treasure Island – a new adaptation for the stage at MATCH

You are cordially invited to join us on an adventure as we sail through Davy Jones’ Locker to find Treasure Island! Just like Stevenson’s classic tale, our production promises sword fights, pirates, mutiny, and treasure as we follow our protagonist, Jem Hawkins though a coming-of-age adventure. This show has been written for adults, and then finessed with kids in mind to create an All-Ages Family Encouraged adventure that promises to delight and entertain across the generations!

“As a mother of two young children, I know that younger audience members are especially sensitive to loud noises, bright lights, and blackouts. To help make the adventure fun for all, we have slightly adapted lights and sound for the matinees, BUT we have added a sensory friendly performance where we will deliver an adjusted performance that will attune to the needs of the group while still delivering a swashbuckling adventure for you and your family!” -Artistic Director Sarah Sneesby

Performing August 9-25, 2024

Our History through 2023 (Highlights Version)

November 2021 – CMP was created and held auditions for their first full-scale production!

May 2022 – CMP had their Inaugural Production with a re-telling of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

August 2022 – CMP worked with the writer and composer to present the regional premiere of Gideon and the Blundersnorp, an all ages family musical that thrilled young and old alike.

February 2023 – We presented an immersive sensorial reading of a new work currently in development by a local Houston actor and playwright – Shanae’a Rae Moore. Synapse is currently undergoing further development and will make it’s world premiere in December of 2024.

July 2023 – Keeping with our movement and devised heavy theme, we produced Mary Zimmerman’s The Secret in the Wings at the MATCH.

December 2023 – We piloted our Emerging Director Mentorship program with a fun all-ages holiday play: Every Christmas Tale Ever Told (& Then Some), where Andrew Roblyer and Sarah Sneesby (both seasoned directors who have done multiple projects at CMP) mentored an actor-turning-director in the art of translating vision to stage.

January 2024 – We participated in the first ever Mix-MATCH Arts Festival with a short TED-talk style about the ethos and ethics of the CMP rehearsal process.

Our Dreams for 2024 (And Beyond!)

August 2024 – Our first ever full-length original adaptation! Treasure Island is the first of hopefully many Family-Encouraged original adaptations of classical texts that CMP will offer in the years to come.

December 2024 – Continuing on from our workshop in 2023, we will be co-producing Synapse by Shanae’a Rae Moore with the Octarine Accord at the MATCH.

January 2025 – CMP was selected to be one of the theatre companies at Mix-MATCH Arts Festival 2025 where we will be presenting an abridged version of an in-development movement-heavy adaptation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland!

The rest of 2025 and beyond are full of dreams and include increasing educational outreach opportunities and seasons full of mixed performance opportunities for a wide range of audiences.
